Empowering Youth Through Exceptional Programs
Celebrating milestones that highlight our dedication to nurturing confident young leaders.
Looking to help your child build confidence, communication skills, and leadership potential? Founded in 2006, the Princeton Youth Leadership Program (YLP) has empowered thousands of young speakers in a fun, supportive, and inspiring environment. Students will learn to speak with confidence, think on their feet, and take on leadership roles—skills they’ll carry for life.
History
The Princeton Youth Leadership Program (YLP) is a public speaking and leadership development program for school-aged children (Grades 1–12). Held annually from January to March, the program spans 11 weeks, taking place on Saturday mornings from 10am-12pm. It was founded in 2005 by Jean Shippos (DTM) and Todd Greenwood (DTM). Over the past 20 years, the program has grown from a small study group with two mentors and a dozen kids, to a thriving initiative supported by an all-volunteer team of over 50 members, serving more than 200 students every year.

Program Objectives
To build confidence in public speaking and cultivate essential leadership skills in a supportive and welcoming environment.
What to Expect Over the 11-Week Program
The Princeton YLP adopts the internationally renowned Toastmasters curriculum. Each session includes the following components:
- Prepared Speeches: Students learn how to organize, write, and deliver effective speeches.
- Evaluations: Participants develop active listening and constructive feedback skills.
- Table Topics: Impromptu speaking exercises strengthen quick thinking and verbal communication.
- Leadership Opportunities: Advanced-level students take on class assistant or co-mentor roles to develop leadership and teamwork abilities.
Students Learn to:
- Overcome the natural nervousness that comes with public speaking.
- Present their ideas in a logical, clear, and convincing manner.
- Listen attentively and respectfully to others.
- Provide helpful, constructive feedback to their peers.
- Lead or participate in group discussions and meetings.
Opportunities for Parents
We welcome and encourage parents to attend adult Toastmasters meetings, held concurrently with YLP sessions and free of cost. Additionally, we always welcome volunteers to help with the program. If you’re interested, your time and expertise would be greatly appreciated.
